  • March 2 - Randy published an article on "Mormons and Film" at the comparative religion website Patheos.com.
  • February 10-12 - Randy attended the KidScreen Summit in New York City.
  • February 6 - Randy wrote the pilot script for Dinosaurus Explore Us, a seven-minute show for 6-11 year-olds in development by Believe Animation in Green Bay, Wisconsin. 
       2009
  • December 12 - Randy attended a Writing for Preschool Television workshop with Susan Kim at Little Airplane Productions in New York City.
  • December 10  - Randy was interviewed for an article on the 1969 film Johny Lingo in the Mormon Times section of the Deseret News, available here.
  • November 20 - Randy's article "What Is Mormon Cinema? Defining the Genre" was published in Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought 42:4 (Winer 2009).
  • November 19 - Randy joined Shooting People, one of the premiere organizations for independent filmmakers, based in London.
  • November 14 - Randy attended a Dance on Camera workshop sponsored by Dance Films Association at the 92nd Street Y in New York City. 
  • November 11 - Randy joined the Independent Feature Project, the country's premiere organization for independent filmmakers, based in New York City.
  • October 22 - Randy wrote the bible and a pilot script for Smartsville, a show for 5-11 year-olds in development by Sharp Image in Karachi, Pakistan. 
  • October 12 - Randy consulted on the pilot for Nicky's Awesome Adventures, a show for 6-11 year-olds in development by Cardamon Assets Inc. in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. 
  • October 12Randy consulted on Incompleat Works, a two-act stage comedy based on the work of William Shakespeare, by writer and director Dennis Agle in Provo, Utah.
  • October 3-4 - Randy attended MIP Junior in Cannes, France.
  • September 23 - Randy wrote the bible for Dinosaurus Explore Us, a preschool interstitial in development by Believe Animation in Green Bay, Wisconsin. 
  • September 11 - Carol (Randy's wife) gave birth to Isabelle Vivian Astle, their second daughter, who weighed 6 lbs. 4.4 oz. and measured 19 inches.
  • September 9 - Randy consulted on the bible and pilot for The Milkshake Show, a preschool show in development by the Grammy nominated Baltimore-based band Milkshake, one of the most popular groups in the U.S. children's music industry.
  • September 4 - Randy published the adult poem "Etching" in the literary journal Dialogue: A Journal of Mormon Thought 42:3 (Fall 2009).
  • September 1 - Randy joined ASIFA-East, the East Coast chapter of the Association Internationale du Film d'Animation.
  • August 21 - Randy founded the LDS Filmmakers' Network, a professional networking organization for all Mormons working in the film, television, and media industries worldwide, available here.
  • June 30 - Randy wrote the bible and pilot script for Who's Watching Conrad?, a show for 7-11 year-olds in development by Believe Animation in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The first scene from the pilot is available for viewing here
  • June 23 - Randy consulted on the bible for Jalebi, a preschool show in development by Kushi Productions in Boston, Massachusetts. 
  • June 13 - Randy completed a sample script of WordGirl, a show with curriculum for 4-9 year-olds, available here.
  • June 5 - Randy's article "Flood in the Desert," a review of the Hurricane Katrina documentary Desert Bayou, was published in Sunstone Magazine no. 154 (May 2009).
  • May 30 - Randy wrote the bible for The Salties, a new preschool series by Francis Fitzpatrick, the creator of the nine-time Emmy Award-winning Jakers! The Adventures of Piggley Winks, at Hibernian American Ltd. in Dublin, Republic of Ireland.
  • May 26 - Randy's article "Mormon Cinema on the Web" was published in BYU Studies 48:1 (Spring 2009).
  • May 2 - Randy participated in the panel discussion "LDS Perspectives on the Arts" at the Mormon Arts Festival in New York City.
  • April 30 - Randy's short film By Water, and Blood, and the Spirit showed at the Mormon Arts Festival in New York City.
  • April 25 - Randy founded the New York LDS Artists' Network, a professional networking organization for all Mormon artists in New York City, and with Stephen Winston designed the website, available here.
  • April 17 - Randy consulted on the script of The Rush, a teen thriller feature film slated to be directed by Ryan Little.
  • April 13 - Randy completed a sample script of the teen sitcom True Jackson, VP, available here.
  • April 6 - Randy began working as a reader for Abbot Management in Pasadena, California, reading and providing coverage on feature film screenplays. He continued in this position until September 16.
  • March 23 - Randy had four additional premises accepted by Handy Manny on Playhouse Disney.
  • February 27 - Randy completed a sample script of a double-length episode of Phineas and Ferb, available here.
  • February 11-13 - Randy attended the KidScreen Summit in New York City.
  • February 3 - Randy published the article "Mormon Cinema on the Web" in the online journal BYU Studies Review, available here
  • February 1 - Randy completed a sample script of the original series of Angelina Ballerina, available here.
  • January 3 - Randy had two premises for the Playhouse Disney show Handy Manny accepted for consideration to advance to the outline stage.

       2008

  • December 5 - Randy's short film By Water, and Blood, and the Spirit showed at the Lingos Film Festival in New York City.
  • December 3 - Randy consulted on the postproduction of Bushed: Teaching Life in Alaska, a feature-length documentary about two public school teachers from the continental United States working in an isolated rural community in Alaska. Expected release in 2009.
  • November 22 - Randy completed a sample script for the Sesame Street segment "Elmo's World," available .
  • November 1 - Randy published the adult poem "Fifth-Floor Walkup" in the peer-reviewed journal BYU Studies 47:2 (Fall 2008).
  • October 27 - Randy launched randyastle.com with four preschool television writing samples, available here.
  • September 20 - Randy's short film Wild City showed at the 6th Matsalu International Nature Film Festival in Lihula, Estonia. 
  • September 19 - Randy did postproduction on two short dance videos for the New York City-based modern dance company M.E.L.D. Danceworks, of pieces staged in Mumbai in the summer of 2008, available here.
  • September 3 - Randy published the article "Nephi's Colored Plates," a history of early Mormon feature films 1913-1915, in the online newsletter of the Mormon Artists' Group in New York City, available here.
  • August 3 - Randy did assistant editing on the sixty-eight-minute Japanese-language documentary Bringing Godzilla Down to Size: The Art of Japanese Special Effects, which premiered at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood and is included on the Classic Media DVD of Rodan and War of the Gargantuas.
  • July 26-28 - Randy attended the Little Airplane Academy on creating preschool television at Little Airplane Productions in New York City.
  • June 24 - Randy launched "Red Balloon," a blog about children's media and literature, available here.
  • May 17 - Randy's short film By Water, and Blood, and the Spirit showed at the Festival du Film Mormon in Brussels, Belgium.
  • April 22 - Randy won the Ultimate Film Junkie award from the Tribeca Film Festival for a thirty-second animation. He attended numerous festival screenings and blogged about some of them here.
  • March 20 - Randy won a Special Award in Criticism from the Association of Mormon Letters for co-editing BYU Studies 46:2 "Mormons and Film."
